Replacing Rigid Machinery with Flexible Robots

Capral aluminium extrusion processing requires the loading of large 300kg Aluminium Billets into Extrusion Presses. Existing specialty machinery was being utilised to complete this process, however due to the extreme heat and pressure conditions, small misalignments occurred over time leading to critical failures when loading.

To reduce downtime, Applied Robotics developed a flexible Robotic solution with a unique Gripper to ensure that the Billet is correctly placed every time. This Gripper can withstand temperatures over five hundred (500) degrees Celsius and work within the constrained space between the Billet Ram and Extrusion Furnace within the Extrusion Press.

To enable flexibility in Billet size, Telescopic Gripping technologies was leveraged to allow Billets of variable Length and Diameter to be held in place for the Billet Ram.
