Robots are not always the answer
This project is a perfect example of how in some cases, robotics are not always the best solution. Instead of a robot, this project used an automated gantry, specially designed to handle heavy bundles of aluminium extrusions.
Not every project should be solved with robotics. Through the initial concept generation phase of the project it may be identified that a custom designed mechanism is favoured over robotic manipulators as in some cases they can provide the cheapest and most reliable automation solution.
This project exemplifies how the simplest design is often the best design. Applied Robotics simplifies designs where possible so our machines are affordable, easy to operate and maintain.
A pair of pneumatic claw grippers are suspended from a servo driven carriage. The carriage drives over a distance of 20 metres to pickup and deliver the extrusion bundle to the skip/ container the operator selects.
The design allowed metal to be moved from a wrapping machine over a long distance to be placed in a skip/ container chosen by the operator.
